CG Animation – 11 Second Club [Nov2013]

Here is an animation that I made for the ’11 Second Club.’ Basically each month the club holds a competition where people can practice their skills by animating to a provided audio track. What’s really nice is that anyone can compete, from college students to the top animators from within the industry. Also since this is an animation competition, all forms are welcomed (2D, 3D, Stop-Motion, etc).

I decided to start trying for the competition a bit late (around the 21st) so I didn’t really have the whole month. The first thing I did was research a bit on the audio clip provided. I went to YouTube and checked out the original scene for some ideas on what to animate. I then decided to gather some resources including free models and reference imagery. Afterwards I took the rest of the day setting up the scene and referencing the characters in. At this time I also started to setup my render shots to get a better idea on how the scene would flow.

This was the first time working with advance character rigs and so I had to learn how ‘pickers’ are used. I guess in actual studios, animators tend to use pickers or some other form of graphical user interface (GUI) to select the various animation handles and components. This took a bit of practice, but I eventually got the hang of it. Finally it was on to the fun part, animating!

Unfortunately, about 2 days into the animation, I decided that I wasn’t really happy with the scene flow, so I scrapped the original idea started over. I then spent the next 4-5 days animating and finalizing the scenes.

Then it was onto the rendering and post production which took the entire last day. Since the competition has specific guidelines for submission, I went with their resolution (560×316) and encoded the the video to fit within a specific file size range (10mb max). I didn’t think that the renders and post production would as long as it did, but I managed to finish everything and submit my entry in with about 25 minutes to spare!

For this competition, there were a total of 267 entries and all members have the chance to vote on every single one of them. The voting period is from the 1st to the 4th of every month with the winner being decided on the 5th. Other than the time spent animating, the voting process was one of the funnest parts of the whole competition! I got to see a ton of interesting ideas and concepts along with various animation styles! I started voting and commenting on each and every video, but by the time I got to the 40th entry, I could see that commenting on all 267 entries would be near to impossible to do. So I decided to start just voting and then commenting on the ones I thought were in the top 20 or so.

When everything was said and done, it was just waiting until the 5th to see the results. For this competition, I managed to place 130 out of 267!

Of course it would have been nice to place in the top 11, but 130 was well above what I realistically expected. Overall I agree with the voting and the accuracy of the results. This was my first entry into the prestigious ’11 Second Club’ and I have to say that it was a lot of fun! Hopefully next competition will be even better!
